EXPERIENCES. Cultural week

By Victoria Aguilera

Our famous cultural week has been a success once again. Under the topic “Europe United”, the different departments of the school have prepared stands related to gastronomy, music, science, maths, languages and history. Nikos Vasileiou receives the award to the best science project and Victoria Aguilera will participate in the national poetry contest with her poem “Europe”.

During the first days, students, families and staff could visit and learn about European scientists and their contribution to the world history. Students in the third year prepared a presentation with some games and experiments to see microscopic life, test your blood type and measure the height of our buildings by means of the shadow they have.

There was also a poetry contest. French, Spanish, Italian, Romanian and English were the languages used and our contestant recited about environment, peace in the world and life as a teenager.

The gym was the venue chosen for the final celebration with food from different European countries. Each class was in charge of a different country and they had to investigate about the most popular dishes abroad and how to cook them. Polenta from Italy, beef Goulash from Hungary or Sacher cake from Austria disappeared in a blink of an eye as soon as the guests arrived. The party was also livened up with music from the European Song Contest. The money from the tickets will be sent to an NGO that helps children in Africa.

EXPERIENCES. Final-year school trip.

By Marius García

Asturias is the destination chosen for our final school trip, which will take place between June 14 to 19. Oviedo, Gijón, Cangas de Onis are the three main places where we are going to stay and the descent to the river Sella, the star activity of the week.

The department of extra-curricular and complementary activities celebrated a meeting last Wednesday with families and students in the fourth year to vote for the best destination. A vast majority of people voted for Asturias (73,1%), placing second Algarve (16,9%) and third Sicily (10%). Mrs. Ruiz, the head of the department, with the delegates of the two groups of the school, also talked about the importance of raising funds for the trip.

There was also a high expectation regarding the teachers who will go with us to the trip, and we were told that we did not have to worry at  all, as “Some candidates have expressed their availability and desire to be part of this adventure”, Mrs. Ruiz said.

At the end of the evening, our delegate Ann Ahmad summarised the activities to be done during the week of the chosen destination and mentioned that depending on the money raised, the journey would be done by plane or by bus.

If you want to help, you can go to the students’ room during the breaks from Monday to Wednesdays or visit our online site www.stratfordss.com/year4trip.

MOTTOS, HOBBIES AND ADVICE

Joseph Fernández:

MOTTO: “Study hard, but do not forget to make good friends. Life will be easier like this!”

CLUBS AND HOBBIES: Basketball and anime.

GIVING ADVICE...

IF I WERE THE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL… I would invest more in sports equipment for the library and social clubs.

IF I WERE A FIRST GRADE STUDENT... I would pay more attention to teachers from the beginning. It’s worth the effort!

SELENE JANSSENS

MOTTO: “May the force be with you during the exams, and never give up.”

CLUBS AND HOBBIES: Class delegate, rhetorics.

GIVING ADVICE...

IF I WERE THE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL… I’d rather have no friends than fake a personality. Be true to yourself!

IF I WERE A FIRST GRADE STUDENT... I would trust teachers more often. They are there to help you!

ANN AHMAD

MOTTO: “If you have a dream, go for it, no matter what!”

CLUBS AND HOBBIES: Languages, chess

GIVING ADVICE...

IF I WERE THE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL… I would look for more schools to do Erasmus projects. It’s the best way to learn a second language!

IF I WERE A FIRST GRADE STUDENT... I would try to be more confident and not so embarrassed to speak in class to ask questions and doubts.

NIKOS VASILEOUS

MOTTO: “May the force be with you during the exams, and never give up.”

CLUBS AND HOBBIES: Environment committee

GIVING ADVICE...

IF I WERE THE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL… I’d rather invest in solar panels to save energy than in new laptops.

IF I WERE A FIRST GRADE STUDENT... I would  not miss any trips at school. They are unforgettable and you make good friends!

VICTORIA AGUILERA

MOTTO: “Stronger together.”

CLUBS AND HOBBIES: Drama and rugby.

GIVING ADVICE...

IF I WERE THE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL… I would build a swimming pool where we could relax after exams and do sports at the same time.

IF I WERE A FIRST GRADE STUDENT... I would not take the mobile phone to school at all. The science teacher saw me using it and my parents were really mad at me.

MARIUS GARCÍA

MOTTO: “May the force be with you during the exams, and never give up.”

CLUBS AND HOBBIES: School magazine, chess

GIVING ADVICE...

IF I WERE THE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL… I’d rather play piped music than ring a horrible bell.

IF I WERE A FIRST GRADE STUDENT... I think I would not leave everything for the final weeks of the year. It can work sometimes, but at the end you realise you are always behind.

GEORGE STEVENSON

MOTTO: “Everybody has a friend who complains a lot. And if you don’t, that friend is you.”

CLUBS AND HOBBIES: Politics, gastronomy club.

GIVING ADVICE...

IF I WERE THE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL… I would install an air conditioner in each classroom. The school is boiling hot during the summer and freezing cold during the winter.

IF I WERE A FIRST GRADE STUDENT... I would not be quiet. I’d rather solve my doubts and express my complaints than get anything at all.

LOLA BARROSO

MOTTO: “Step aside while we change the world.”

CLUBS AND HOBBIES: Help the poor NGO.

GIVING ADVICE...

IF I WERE THE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL… I would ask different associations to come to class so that students can learn more about the necessities of the world around us.

IF I WERE A FIRST GRADE STUDENT... I think I would not go to the library so often during the breaks. That’s the best time to make good friends.

SPEAKS

Dear students,

I just wanted to write some lines to say thank you to all the students in the 4th grade, who have made this yearbook possible for the first time in our school history. It’s an amazing job!

Your generation reflects the pillars of our school: faith in hard work, team-based projects, self-discipline and entrepreneurship.  We strongly believe that education is the seed for a successful and forward-thinking society.

That is exactly what you have accomplished after these years. However, now it is time to fly alone, and each of you will find your own way to the future to become fully autonomous adults. No doubt that if you are committed to it, you will have a bright future ahead.

Best wishes,

Ms. García

Of course, include a final page with credits, that is, a list of the students creating the yearbook. Remember it is important to be original and creative to make it unique for your class and school:

  • Share your own photos. Avoid finding them on the Internet, but if you do it, give credits to their authors.
  • Write about your own experiences and opinions at school. Do not make them up.
  • Do not use translators. Express yourself in English as best as you can.

Apoyo visual

Think  now of ways to organize your yearbook:

Focus

Think of the type of yearbook you want to create and how you are going to present yourselves:

  • Will it be a formal and rigorous yearbook or will it be humorous?
  • Will the pictures be original? Will they be edited somehow?

Software

There are different free-licensed programmes or online sites which can help you with the design:

Open Office is a famous free-licensed editor. Click here to download it. Writer and Impress are too good options.
Scribus is the best option if you want a professional layout.

You can publish your yearbook using a blog such as Averroes.

Design

Create a template or find a style for your yearbook. It is important to make it very visual:

  • Include both texts and images.
  • Choose wisely a good font and size for the titles and texts. Fonts / Fonts
  • Think of an appropriate colour palette for them. Here are some examples: Colour palette 1 / Colour palette 2
  • Add other multimedia elements if you want to publish your yearbook online:  videos, audios, presentations, etc.
  • Distribute harmonically all the elements above.

3. First steps

Test yourself. Are you ready to design a yearbook?

Option A. First drafts

Read and complete

Match the sentences to the following sections of a yearbook:

Ann is the student who is most likely to win an award this year.
Thank you for supporting me these four years.
I’d rather buy a laptop for school than a book.
“Never give up. If you find it difficult, go for it.”
If I were a first-year student again, I would study harder.

Enable JavaScript

Option B. Design

Listen to these tracks in which students talk about their schools. Imagine you want to transcribe it for their yearbook. Which section would they be included in?

Option C. The format

Have a look at the following slides. They are taken from a yearbook, but it seems incomplete, with grammatical mistakes or visual errors. Can you find them?

Possible answers

Slide 1: The index is not numbered. One of the sections is not very suitable for a yearbook because, if it is not ironic, it can be offensive to some people (Worst students).

Slide 2: The page does not include a title. It seems to include the student’s motto, his favourite film, a suggestion for the school, and his hobbies.

Slide 3: The expression most likely should be used in both cases.

Slide 4: Thanks a million for BEING there should be used.

Slide 5: There are two grammatical mistakes: I’d rather or I would rather in the first sentence and I would find or I’d rather find in the second one.

Option D. Tribute

Give a tribute to those living with you by creating a short booklet with the main cover,  some images, your experience or an anecdote with that person, and a thank you note. Explain what you would do for them if you had the chance.

Captura tribute

Add other sections and this template if you want to.

4. Check what I’ve learnt

Everything you learn helps you achieve the goals you set for yourself. Reflect for a moment on all you have learned so far. Complete STEP 3 of your Learning Diary (I review what I have learned).

Remember:

- Ask your teacher whether you will fill it in on paper or on the computer.

- If you fill it in on the computer, don't forget to save it on your computer when you finish it! Cheer up, you'll do great!
