THE MESSAGE IS OUR WORK

We are not one but many

NGOs

NGOs are non-profit associations which work for social, economic and environmental development. There are different causes:

  • Fair trade.
  • Minorities.
  • Human rights.
  • Environment.
  • Animal protection.
  • Humanitarian aid.

Find an NGO

There may be NGOs in your neighbourhood, but you can also find them online.

Search online:

  • Use search engines.
  • Type key words to filter results.
  • Use NGOs’ official sites and social media.
  • Find other webs for a double check.
  • Identify main and secondary ideas.
  • Find out how to contact the organization.

Tips to understand:

  • Listen and watch actively.
  • Skim: read quickly or superficially the text.
  • Scan: read to find specific information.
  • Summarize or paraphrase what you hear.
  • Pay attention to non-verbal cues.

A ROLL-UP

A roll-up can be a technique to make your NGO’s cause be known and attract new members, collaborators, donors or volunteers.

“Write for the rights.”

“Making Wikipedia speak. Everyone should have access to free knowledge.”

Sections of a roll-up

a) Name, logo and slogan.
b) Message.
c) Contact details.
d) Image.
e) Name, logo and slogan:

NAME, LOGO AND SLOGAN

HELP WITHOUT BORDERS

“When we give CHEERFULLY and accept GRATEFULLY, everyone is BLESSED.”

GREEN LEAVES

“Volunteers do not necessarily have the TIME; they just have the HEART.”

A slogan is a catchy phrase that often uses positive and descriptive words.

Remember:

  • Brainstorm a wordlist related to your organization.
  • Keep it simple.
  • Use powerful words and phrases as cheerful, blessed or heart.

MESSAGE

Your goal is to encourage your audience to support your organization through a message that reaches them.

 Write an informational text that:

  • Provides details about the goals of your organization.
  • Explains to your audience what your NGO has achieved in the past. This will make your organization reliable.
  • Defines what your NGO wants to improve and how.
  • Bullet-pointed lists:

Ordering key information in a list is a great way of telling the reader what they need to know.

Example:

About 300 000 hectares have burnt in Spain in 2022.  Destroying our forests is also killing animals' natural habitats, producing carbon dioxide emissions hence deteriorating human health.

Our NGO protects our forests, as our volunteers help by planting trees, picking up garbage, helping with firewalls or just by donating.

Will you be our next forest saver?

DIALOGUE

Earth Day

Kate: Hi, Mike!

Mike: Hi, Kate! How are you?

Kate: I am fine and what’s about you?

Mike: I am also fine! I am helping my local NGO to organize a garbage clean-up event.

Kate: Is the NGO called “Open Arms”?

Mike: Yes, it is! In April we celebrate Earth Day; that’s why we are organizing the garbage clean-up event.

Kate: Where does the event take place?

Mike: At Fernandez Beach on April 4th from 11 am till 1 pm. Why don’t you collaborate?

Kate: That’s a good idea.

Mike: Just send a message to 0034 774 653 895 with your name and age.

It would also be great if you signed up for our newsletter. Therefore, you should visit our website: www.openarms.es and click on sign up for our newsletter Then complete the form.

Kate: Fantastic! I will send the message and sign up right away.

Mike: There is also a reward for each garbage bag you collect! Volunteers who collect one bag of garbage get a snack. If you present two garbage bags, you will be awarded with a snack and a soft drink and for three bags you will get a snack, a soft drink and an ice cream!

Kate: Really? See you at Fernandez beach!

Mike: See you then!
