4.2. Your video practice
Previously in section 3 “Your story”, you selected an object and talked to your classmates about it. Why don’t you record a presentation of that object on video now? Let me help you with different camera shots and movements you can use when shooting videos.

1. Camera shots and movements
These camera techniques can inspire you to create creative and original videos.
Camera shots
- Long shot: to inform about a location, season. It adds information about the object in the image. It’s an open image that shows the surroundings of the element in the centre.
- American shot: just below the knees of the people in the centre of the image. It is used to show if the main character has something in the hands or for a conversation between several people.
- Medium shot: it shows an item from the middle to the top or to the ground. It emphasizes one person who is talking in a conversation, or maybe the legs of a football player or a dancer, or the hands of a cook.
- Close up: a short shot that expresses intimacy, used to show emotions or speak to viewers.
Camera movements
- Zoom in / out: the camera moves closer to gain or lose intimacy with the viewer, to show details or where the action happens.
- Tilt up / down: gives details of an element moving the camera up/down or vice versa.
- Travelling: the camera moves from one side to another to show movement of the element in the image.
Definition:
Group of similar or different elements put together.

Camera shots with a camera.

The long shot shows the image with the surrounding elements.
El plano largo muestra la imagen junto a los elementos de su entorno.
The American shot shows the main object and the closest objects.
El plano americano muestra el objeto principal y los objetos que están cerca de él.
The medium shot shows just the main object in the picture.
El plano medio muestra solo al objeto principal en el centro de la imagen.
The close up shot shows details of the main object.

2. Behind the cameras
All cinema artists began at some point learning a bit about cameras, video shooting or streaming, just like you are going to do.

Option B: Practice your best shots
You’re going to record your pencil case. You also have to record your voice saying out loud what shot you’re recording.
Camera shots
- Take a long shot of your pencil case on your desk.
- Take an American shot of your pencil case.
- Take a medium shot of your pencil case.
- Take a close up of your pencil case.
Camera movements
- Record a travelling to the right movement.
- Record a movement from medium shot to close up.
Check your shots and see if they’re similar to those in the flashcards.
Option C: Record videos for these audios
- Listen to the instructions and then record a video according to what you hear.
- Remember! All the movements and shots have to be slow.

When we have to do an activity, we may have doubts about our ability to do it. In order to overcome these fears, follow these tips:
- There are things you do very well. Use them to do the activity.
- There are things that are a little difficult for you to do. Try and believe in yourself. You will be surprised at what you can achieve.
- Some things are very difficult. Look at an example, ask your classmate or ask your teacher for help.
3. Check what I've learnt
How much you have learned to get here! Everything you learn helps you to achieve the goals you set for yourself.
Reflect for a moment on all you have learned so far. And complete STEP 3 of your Learning Diary (I review what I have learned).
Remember:
- Ask your teacher whether you will fill it in on paper or on the computer.
- If you fill it in on the computer, don't forget to save it on your computer when you finish it!
