Pancake Day Celebrated At Cramlington School

Children at Burnside School in Cramlington celebrated the festivities of Shrove Tuesday1 with a special pancake day organised by local caterers.

They created the special lunchtime event at the primary school for over 190 of the schools pupils for the special day.

24 eggs, 2.6kg flour and 7litres milk were used to make the pancakes2 for the children with some unusual fillings3 including fresh fruit, syrup4 & honey.

Shrove Tuesday is traditionally the day preceding Ash Wednesday5, which is the first day of Lent6.

Making and eating such food as pancakes was considered the last feast, as consumption was restricted during the ritual fasting of Lent.

It is the first year of Pancake Day in the lunch menu at Burnside School.

Headteacher, Jane Ramsay said: “Pancake Day was a real success and was a fun and different way to help the pupils learn about Shrove Tuesday. They enjoyed learning how pancakes were made and experimenting with the different fillings. The children often receive varied meals and theme days at school, but today was a special treat”.
