The story of the plate
Plate is thought as a round thing used to serve food. The first porcelain plates were made in China around 600 AD. They were being traded with the Europeans when in 1708 the Chinese process of making porcelain was discovered by a German potter. Many of the world’s best known potteries were founded during this period. At first only white and blue were used to colour the plates.
In the beginning of 19th century decorative plates with colourful patterns were displayed. Collecting plates became an inexpensive hobby for European nobles. In 1895 the first limited collector’s edition was released. Christmas and Easter plates became very popular. Nowadays, plates for different occasions have been produced.
The process of making porcelain plates consists of several stages. First, the plate is shaped. After that it is glazed. Then it can be decorated. Finally, it is heated to high temperature in a *kiln to permanently get its shape.
Now plates are usually made of ceramic materials such as porcelain and stoneware. However, there a lot of other materials plates can be made of. There are disposable plates which are made from cardboard, paper or organic materials , such as leaves. They are normally intended to be used only once.
*kiln: A special oven for drying pottery or bricks.
Now answer these questions. Remember to use full answers, that is, subject and verb. Below there is an example:
Example: Where was the first car made?
Answer: The first car/It was made in France.
1. Where were the first porcelain plates made?
2. When was the process of making porcelain discovered in Europe?
3. What were the first colours used for decoration?
4. Who started collecting plates?
5. What was released in 1895?
6. What are the four stages of making a porcelain plate?
7. What can plates be made of?
8. What is "a disposable plate" made of?
