But before all that, there was Summerhill. Summerhill is often said to be the first school based on freedom and democratic ideals. It is an independent British boarding school that was founded in 1921 by Alexander Sutherland Neill with the belief that the school should be made to fit the child, rather than the other way around. Attendance in classes is voluntary, and children can play all day if they feel like it. The school runs as a free and democratic society. Rules are developed and adopted in weekly meetings, in which every member of the school community, from a five-year old child to the headmistress, has an equal vote. At Summerhill, the emotional development of children comes first, lessons second. In 1997, Tony Blair's New Labor government took steps to improve standards in education. Summerhill was threatened with closure because it refused to compromise its educational and social philosophy.

The school was jubilant in 2007 when it received a positive Ofsted inspection following the controversy surrounding the 1999 inspection which almost saw the school shut down.

Objetivos

The Sudbury Valley School was founded in 1968 in Framingham, Massachusetts. There are now over 35 schools based on the Sudbury Model in the United States, Denmark, Israel, Japan, Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. The model has three basic tenets: educational freedom, democratic governance and personal responsibility. It is a private school, attended by children from the ages of 4 to 19.

At the Sudbury Valley School, students individually decide what to do with their time, and learn as an aside to their personal efforts, interactions and ordinary experience, rather than through classes or a standard curriculum.
