3.3 There is some water / Hay agua

María y Anne están en el restaurante. A María le encanta el restaurante pero no sabe qué pedir así que Anne le explica lo que hay:

 

M: Oh, this restaurant is great! But I don't know what to order!

A: There are some wonderful pasta dishes and there is a starter that I like very much: Caprese salad, it has tomatoes and some cheese. It is delicious!

M: Is there any meat or fish?

A: No, I am sorry, this is a vegetarian restaurant. There isn't any meat. But there are lots of different pizzas and some fish.

M: Ok, I'd like a Caprese salad and a mushroom pizza.

A: I'd like the same. What about the drinks?

M: I'd like some water.

A: And I'd like some orange juice. We are ready to order...Mr waiter!

Fíjate bien en el diálogo. Cuando Anne quiere explicar a María lo que hay utiliza las palabras there is y there are:

  • Utiliza there is cuando lo que hay es sólo uno/a (singular) o es incontable.

Ej: there is a starter. (singular)

there isn't any meat (incontable)
  • Utiliza there are cuando hay más de uno/a.
Ej: There are lots of different pizzas.

 

Fíjate también en las palabras some y any:

  • Utilizamos some en frases afirmativas con el plural para decir algunos/as y obligatoriamente delante de incontables.

 

Ej: some pasta dishes (algunos platos de pasta)

some cheese (queso)
  • Utilizamos any en frases negativas e interrogativas con plurales y obligatoriamente con incontables.

Ej:There aren't any pasta dishes (no hay platos de pasta) no obligatorio

Is there any meat? (¿hay carne?) obligatorio

Pre-conocimiento

Cuando pedimos algo en restaurantes o en tiendas en inglés tenemos que utilizar la frase “I'd like” (querría, me gustaría..) y no traducir directamente nuestro “quiero” porque allí suena demasiado exigente y por lo tanto maleducado.
