Dear student,

We hope Unit 3 allowed you to improve your communication skills in English. In this fourth unit you will learn about Scotland, the environment,  and flora and fauna.

As usual, you will be exposed to all kinds of activities: listening, speaking, reading and writing. You will learn about Scottish culture and will continue making intercultural connections.

 

 

Listening

Listening:
 

You will listen to speakers of different accents and hear authentic texts and daily life conversations. You will have to do various tasks  that include multiple choice, fill in the gaps, true or false, matching, etc.

Reading: Through reading, you will consolidate grammatical structures, learn new vocabulary and internalize how the English language works. You will also learn some reading strategies along the way.

Speaking: You will do monologues and maintain conversations with other speakers.

Writing: You will write texts intended for different readers using different registers and writing formats. You will learn how to write cohesively and coherently using vocabulary and structures from the level.

Technology will still be central to our learning process. We hope you are now more comfortable with it and you gradually start using online resources independently in order to continue learning English.

Tema 1

In this lesson you will:

  • Get to know the city of Edinburgh and its main places of interest.
  • Learn adjectives to describe cities.
  • Establish the most important differences between city life and country dwelling - advantages and disadvantages.
  • Study vocabulary related to environmental issues.
  • Learn how to provide solutions for environmental problems and how to express the expected results.
  • Become familiar with the structure of an essay to provide solutions for a given problem.
  • Practice how to make hypotheses with conditional sentence types I and II.
  • Learn the form and uses of future time clauses.
  • Review how to pronounce the schwa sound.

Tema 2

In this lesson you will:

  • Study words related to the process of reducing, reusing and recyling - types of waste, types of containers, items which can or can't be recycled...
  • Be able to establish a difference between the recycling policy in Scotland and in Spain
  • Learn the form and uses of the third conditional 
  • Practise how to talk about hypothetical situations in the past, how to express regret about something in the past and how to critizice someone/something or point out mistakes.
  • Practise how to pronounce the sounds /w/, /j/ and /h/
  • Be able to discriminate between the voiceless consonant h and the silent h

Tema 3

In this lesson you will:

  • Learn vocabulary related to geographical features, climate, weather and natural hazards.
  • Learn weather idioms and expressions.
  • Talk about weather, natural hazards and weather forecasts.
  • Warn somebody against doing something dangerous.
  • Learn some cultural aspects of Scotland.
  • Get acquainted with British weather forecast broadcasts.
  • Read and listen to conversations about weather conditions and natural hazards.
  • Distinguish and practice the sounds /tʃ/ and /dʒ/ and learn their correspondent spelling.
  • Use cause and effect connectives correctly.
  • Learn how to form adjectives by adding suffixes to a root.
  • Review and master your knowledge about the use of articles.
  • Write a for and against essay about the topic given.
  • Create a brochure.

Tema 4

In this lesson you will:

  • Study words related to plants, trees, flowers and animals.
  • Learn some new idioms.
  • Talk about biodiversity and endangered species.
  • Read about the end of the world.
  • Be able to establish a difference between some easily confused words.
  • Learn verb patterns.
  • Use linking words of contrast.
  • Practise how to make predictions.
  • Practise how to pronounce the sounds /æ/ and /ʌ/.
  • Learn about the Scottish landscape, Scottish landmarks and the symbol of Scotland.

Organización de los contenidos

Los contenidos están estructurados en 6 unidades didácticas y éstas se construyen con los siguientes elementos básicos:

  • Cada unidad incluye un esquema conceptual y cada tema un resumen, útiles para reforzar lo estudiado.
  • El elemento Top Tips recoge algunas ideas claves y fundamentales de cada apartado. Estos puntos importantes vienen desglosados con diferentes iconos morados correspondientes a los distintos aspectos lingüísticos . (Vocabulario, gramática, funciones comunicativas, fonética, escuchar)
  • Los temas contienen ejercicios de autoevaluación (Do it yourself) y actividades de lectura (Reading activity) para desarrollar y aplicar los conocimientos adquiridos. También hay tareas de diferentes tipologías (orales, escritas y de mediación) con sus diferentes iconos en color azul.
  • También se incluyen algunos elementos de motivación, que no son exigibles: Para saber más (Moving on), que suelen contener enlaces externos;  Curiosidad (Focus on), que presenta aspectos interesantes o anecdóticos y apuntes culturales  (Culture counts)
