What month is it?
When Catholic Europe adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1582, Anglican England refused to follow. With time, this meant that the difference in dates between the continent and the British Isles grew to nearly two weeks. You could leave England on 4th June and
arrive in France on 16th (now that's a long journey!). When the British adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1753, Wednesday 2nd September was followed by Thursday 14th September. Many people protested , shouting "Give us back our 11 days!". So when people say that Cervantes died 1 day before Shakespeare (22nd and 23rd April 1616), in fact in reality there were 10 days between them!
How many days in a month?
How do you remember which months have 31 days and which have 30? The British use this short rhyme:
- Thirty days have September,
- April, June, and November.
- All the rest have 31,
- Except February alone,
- And that has 28 days clear,
- And 29 in a leap year.
- (What's a leap year? They happen every 4 years.)
