4.4 Let me tell you about my ideal animal!

Retor dice

Great! You have your ideal animal and your Fact File with the information about it.

But before your presentation you have to write in your notebook a text about the animal you created. Ready?

Do you need help with the text? You can find it in the Guide to elaborate oral and written texts.

1. Fact File

Before a presentation you have to:

1. Organise your ideas.

2. Oral presentation

Structure

An oral presentation has a structure:

  • Introduction: In the introduction you greet the audience with expressions like:
    1. Hello everyone / Good morning/ Good afternoon
    2. I’m going to talk about…/ I’d like to talk about…/ This is my presentation about…
  • Body: In the body of your presentation you give the audience specific information about it.
  • End: You end your presentation with expressions like:
    1. This is my project, I hope you liked it.
    2. Thank you very much for your attention/ for your time.
    3. Are there any questions?

Memorise

In an oral presentation you cannot read but you can have a card or a fact file with essential information, because it is easier to memorise only some words than a text. To do this, choose only key and important words, like nouns and adjectives. Look at the example of a Fact File:

You can also select important information using diagrams. Look at this example:

Practise

Practice makes perfect, because in order to give a good presentation you have to say it a few times to memorise it. Prepare it in front of a mirror because you will see how you do it. This checklist has tips that will be useful to prepare your oral presentation:

Control the time.
Make eye contact with your audience.
Speak clearly and confidently.
Speak loudly enough.
Have confident body language.

You can find more tips to better your oral expression in the Guide to elaborate oral and written texts.

Self-evaluation

Use this self-evaluation to check your oral presentation:

I have only essential information in my notes for the presentation (a fact file or a diagram).
I do not read the presentation.
I control the time I have for the presentation.
I make eye contact with the audience.
I speak clearly and confidently.
I speak loudly enough.
I have confident body language.

Have you checked all the tick boxes? Great! You’re ready to do it in class!

You can find more ideas for your oral presentation in the Guide to elaborate oral and written texts.

Ways to help yourself

It is very common that when we are working, we talk quietly to ourselves.

It is a way to understand what we are doing and to find solutions to tasks or activities.

Do it often because it will help you:

  • Remember the steps to do the activity.

  • Ask yourself questions to understand the information.

  • Encourage you to finish the activity and stay focused.

  • Know how you feel about the activity.

Talk to yourself. You will learn better!

3. I remember and organise my ideas

What information can you give about an animal? Think about it and brainstorm some ideas. Use this cloud to help you:

4. Differents ways to organise my ideas

The brainstorming is a good way to organise your ideas and get started with a text and a presentation. Click here to know more about it.

5. Preparing a presentation

Ready for practice? Let’s see how much you know!

Option A: We order the process for a presentation

Option C: We reconstruct a presentation

Reconstruct the presentation of a lynx according to the Fact File information.

  • The lynx lives in the Mediterranean forest.
  • It usually eats rabbits and birds.
  • It lives from 10 to 15 years.
  • It weighs around 13 kilos.
  • It is a feline but it is heavier and faster than a cat, and smaller than a lion.
  • It is better than a tiger because it has got nice spots and it is not as dangerous.

Check
