1.2. Indefinite article

ARTICLES

In English there are three types of articles: definite, indefinite and zero.

Now we will focus on the indefinite article. We use indefinite articles in English when we don't want to refer to a concrete object or entity (let's call it 'noun'). In other words, something which is not definite.

In English there are two forms for singular nouns: 'a' and 'an'. 'a' is used before a consonant sound and 'an' is used before a vowel sound. Remember: sounds, not letters!

As for plural nouns, we use the zero article for indefinite objects or entities.

sound

A sound is not a letter.

It is quite common for an English student to say *'an university' because we think that 'university' starts with the letter 'u'. However, the correct way is 'a university' because that word starts with the sound / j /, a semi consonant whose name is jod (you can check its pronunciation, the pronunciation of university here or learn more about this symbol here). When in doubt, use a dictionary or websites like HowjsayDictionary.com or even Google Translate, to mention a few.
